A copy of the IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter with the organization's name must be provided. American Muslim Fund carefully reviews all grant recommendations and conducts due diligence checks to ensure that recommended recipients are legitimate charities and are eligible to receive the grant. Required documentation includes a) Annual Report for the last three years (if available) and b) Form 990 for the last three years (if available). American Muslim Fund's policy is to then review the information and documents provided by the grantee organization, including but not limited to verifying the organization's IRS status, reviewing the organization's documents and website and visiting third party ratings websites such as Better Business Bureau, Charity Navigator and Guidestar. American Muslim Fund will also conduct searches to confirm that the grantee organizations are in compliance with the IRS and US Treasury rules and that they have not had their exempt status revoked. The names of grantee organizations and their board of directors will be searched against Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions lists and any other lists as may be relevant from time to time. Additionally a staff member may conduct a telephone interview with the leadership of the grantee organization for the purpose of reviewing their organizational structure, sustainability, learning more about their founders, board involvement, what they do in the years where they do not reach fundraising goals, how they create those goals, how they evaluate success, and other relevant information. Due diligence requirements may vary and are evaluated on a case by case basis.
